At Wheatley, we recognise the vital importance of promoting physical activity and participation in school sport for all children. As well as increasing children's health and wellbeing at school, PE also helps children to develop habits and interests which will help them to maintain active and healthy lifestyles as they grow older. In addition, school sport has been shown to help children to develop confidence, leadership and social skills and is strongly linked to improved academic performance.
Our physical education teaching and learning is underpinned by the following intent and principles:

Children at Wheatley receive at least two hours of high quality physical education every week, taught by their class teacher, generally spread over two formal sessions and our daily wake and shake routines. Physical education sessions may take place indoors or outdoors, depending on the area of curricular study.
All children are taught a balance of games, dance, gymnastics and athletics throughout their time at Wheatley and additionally, in Key Stage 2, all children take part in a term of swimming lessons, with additional top up sessions provided for those who need them.

Our high quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. To enable this, Wheatley offers a range of competitive opportunities for all children to take part in, from personal challenges, up through intra-school activities eg. class v class hockey matches to inter-school events eg. Partnership cross country or netball tournaments.
At Wheatley, physical education lessons are complemented by extra-curricular activities, clubs and break time games. We are also working towards active lessons and active learning wherever possible.
The government provides additional funding of £150 million per annum to improve the provision of physical education and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments of Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport - is allocated to primary school headteachers. The funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and Sport in schools.
