At Wheatley, we believe that a wide, varied, and diverse history curriculum will enable children to develop a deeper understanding of how people’s lives have shaped the world around them. By exploring wider historical concepts within the context of significant periods and placing these within a coherent chronological narrative, pupils will be able to make meaningful connections between different historical periods and the present day. In order to inspire pupils’ curiosity we offer them opportunities to explore different methods of historical enquiry including first-hand experiences with historical sources. |
In Reception, history learning will be integrated within teaching around the learning area Understanding the World. This learning will provide the foundations and initial skills on which more explicit history learning can be developed. In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, three history units of learning will be taught in each year. Alongside the specific unit content, children will be taught ‘how to do history’ and develop historical perspective through five core aspects of history: chronological knowledge and understanding, historical vocabulary, historical enquiry, interpretations of history, and key historical concepts (continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity and difference, diversity, and significance). |
