Mental Health and Wellbeing

'Mental health is a state of wellbeing in which every individual realises their own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community. mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. It affects how we think, feel and act.'   (World Health Organisation)

At Wheatley CE Primary we are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our pupils, families and staff as we believe being mentally well is key to thriving and becoming a positive and productive member of society. We take a whole school approach to wellbeing with the view that mental health is everyone's business and that we all have a role to play.

We aim to:

  • promote the positive mental health and wellbeing of all pupils and staff
  • promote an open culture across the school community which increases understanding of wellbeing and awareness of common mental health matters
  • develop open channels of communication so that everyone knows who they can talk to
  • ensure all members of the school community understand the importance of mental health alongside physical health and take active steps to support both of these
  • provide support to children experiencing mental health difficulties
  • promote the development of protective factors which build resilience to mental health problems
  • provide support and appropriate professional development and training for staff

We focus primarily on prevention:

 - creating a calm, safe environment where mental health problems are less likely

 - teaching children about mental health and how to look after it

 - supporting all children with transitions and change

 - encouraging and supporting children to be resilient

Through the Personal Social Health Education (PSHE), PE and RE curriculums children learn about mental health and wellbeing. This includes exploring a sense of belonging and self-esteem, teamwork, perseverance, healthy relationships, resilience, investigating big questions and discussing change and difficult events (e.g. bereavement). Daily collective worship also contributes to the mental health and wellbeing of our pupils. It enables pupils to explore aspects of wellbeing in relation to the Christian faith and our school values as well as examples from other faiths.

There are various organisations offering advice and guidance to families regarding mental health:
