At Wheatley CE Primary School we believe that developing pupils' arithmetic skills improves fluency in calculation using the four operations and provides pupils with the skills they require to solve more complex problems. With this in mind, the aim of the badge system is to build pupil skill and confidence in arithmetic using a rigorous, challenging and fun approach.
The badge system is progressive, enabling teachers to challenge all pupils in the class during each badge attempt. The badges assess the following skills and pupils start at the badge that is most appropriate to their current level of arithmetic fluency. All pupils entering Year 1 start with pre badge 1 (spots), moving through the stages as they progress through Key Stages 1 and 2. Where appropriate, based on the class teacher's assessment, pupils in reception will also be offered the opportunity to take part.
